Neonatal And paediatric surgery

Neonatal and Pediatric Surgery is a broad field with many challenges. The aim of this short book is to provide the reader with several informative chapters in the field of neonatal and pediatric surgery. Pediatric patients undergoing surgical procedures commonly require some volume of blood or blood component replacement in the perioperative period. Pediatric patients undergoing major surgery associated with substantial blood loss should be evaluated pre-operatively. The care also involves counseling expectant mothers of fetuses with surgical problems, allaying their fears regarding their babies, and discussing with them the various treatment options including the prognosis of the baby.

Bed side EEG

Now, the world’s first bedside electroencephalogram (EEG) device provides clinicians with a quick and objective measurement of the acute brain. In neonates, EEG is the best and sometimes the only way for seizure detection. Neonates in the NICU are at high risk for seizures, which are associated with an increased risk of mortality and poor long-term neuro-developmental outcome. Therefore, there is a need to develop updated guidelines that will characterize which neonates are at higher risk for seizures and who should be connected to EEG, and when, in order to improve the efficiency of EEG monitoring strategies in the NICU.
